Celebrating Culture & Community: A Look at Kofago Dance Ensemble’s Interview on BronxNet TV

This month, I had the pleasure of joining Dr. Bob Lee on BronxNet TV’s“OPEN” to share the vision behind the Culture Rising Dance Conference—a new initiative that’s already stirring excitement across the Bronx.

The Culture Rising Dance Conference, happening August 22–23, 2025 at Lehman College, is a free two-day event created in partnership with the Kofago Institute and Lehman’s Theatre & Dance Department. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to provide accessible, high-quality dance education rooted in the African Diaspora for Bronx residents of all ages, with a special focus on youth and emerging artists.

During the interview, I shared how this conference will offer workshops in West African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latino, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary dance styles—led by a dynamic mix of intergenerational instructors. It’s more than just technique; it’s an immersion into movement, history, and the cultural traditions that shape our identities.

Why This Matters

The Bronx is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, but access to arts programming—especially free, community-centered programming—remains a challenge for many. This conference is about breaking down those barriers, creating space where art and culture are not just observed, but lived and experienced.

What I Loved About the Interview

  • Dr. Bob Lee’s insight and warmth brought the mission of the conference to life for viewers.

  • We had the chance to discuss the role of dance in preserving heritage while inspiring new generations.

  • The conversation highlighted how Kofago’s work isn’t just about performance—it’s about empowerment, education, and unity.

Looking Ahead

The Culture Rising Dance Conference is just the beginning. My hope is that it will spark ongoing collaborations, inspire young artists, and strengthen the connection between Bronx residents and the global African Diaspora.

If you missed the segment, you can watch it below. I invite you to share it with your networks and help spread the word—because when we rise together through culture, the possibilities are endless.
